The skipjack was designated the official state boat of Maryland in 1985; fleets of skipjacks used to dredge oysters from the floor of the Chesapeake Bay in the winter.  Originating in the 1890’s, Skipjacks are the last working boats under sail in the United States.

Tilghman Island is home to several of the remaining Chesapeake Bay Skipjack Fleet now recognized as national treasures.
